Compared on the things that decide whether an Indian business can adopt the tool. On India-readiness, Sarvam AI is ahead.
Gemini and Sarvam are the two names that come up most when Indian users ask for AI that works in their own language. They're built for different jobs: Gemini is Google's general-purpose assistant, woven into Android, Gmail and Docs, with the broadest Indian-language coverage of the big global assistants. Sarvam is an Indian AI company whose strength is Indian-language speech, translation and voice agents, sold as rupee-priced APIs, plus its Indus chat app.

Choose Sarvam AI if…
you want the stronger India-readiness score (7/7 vs 4/7)
For a person who wants one assistant for everyday questions, writing, documents and email — in English or a major Indian language — Gemini is the more complete product, and many Indians already have its paid tier free through Jio. For a business building voice bots, call transcription, dubbing or translation across Indian languages, and wanting an Indian vendor with a GST invoice and India-hosted inference, Sarvam is the better first test.
On our India-readiness checklist Sarvam passes all seven checks and Gemini passes four: Gemini bills in rupees and takes UPI through Google Play, but its personal plans don't come with an input-credit-eligible GST invoice and it doesn't offer India data residency. That score measures how easy each is to buy and run as an Indian business, not answer quality.
Pricing in rupees
Gemini has a free tier. Google AI Plus, launched in India on 10 December 2025, is ₹399 a month (₹199 a month introductory for the first six months), and Google AI Pro is ₹1,950 a month. Jio users on an unlimited 5G plan of ₹349 or more (or a 1.5 GB/day plan of ₹299 or more) can claim 18 months of AI Pro free from the MyJio app until 29 October 2026, per Jio's terms.
Sarvam is metered. As of 17 October 2026 its pay-as-you-go rates are ₹0.49 a minute for speech-to-text, ₹3 per 1,000 characters for Bulbul V3 text-to-speech, ₹2 per 1,000 characters for translation, and ₹15 per million input tokens for its Sarvam 105B model, drawn from prepaid rupee credits with no monthly fee. New accounts get free credits. Its Indus chat app launched as a free beta in February 2026.
In practice that means Gemini is a per-person subscription and Sarvam is usage you pay for as your product or workflow runs.
GST invoices
This is the clearest difference for a business. Google charges GST on personal Gemini plans, but the invoice doesn't carry your GSTIN, so you can't claim input tax credit on it; Google's own help centre points businesses to Google Workspace, which includes Gemini and supports GSTIN invoicing. Sarvam is an Indian company billing in rupees and issues an invoice after every payment.
Indian languages and voice
Gemini understands and writes the major Indian languages well in text and voice chat, and it's on almost every Android phone in the country — for most everyday tasks in Hindi, Tamil or Bengali, that's enough.
Sarvam goes deeper on speech. Its Saaras V4 model, launched in September 2026, covers 22 Indian languages plus English, detects the spoken language automatically and handles code-mixed speech like Hinglish; its Bulbul voices are built around Indian accents and phone-quality audio. Those accuracy and latency figures are Sarvam's own, and we haven't seen an independent benchmark against Gemini. If voice quality decides it, test both on a few minutes of your own recordings.
Data hosting
Sarvam markets its inference platform as India-hosted and was selected by MeitY to build a sovereign model under the IndiaAI Mission. It also hosts third-party models such as Gemma, GLM and DeepSeek, so confirm the region for the specific model you use. Gemini's data residency options are limited and don't include an India guarantee for personal plans; for regulated data, check with whoever owns compliance, especially with DPDP obligations tightening from 13 November 2026.

Bottom line

Frequently asked questions
Is Sarvam AI better than Gemini for Indian languages?
For Indian-language speech — transcription, voice bots, text-to-speech and code-mixed audio — Sarvam is purpose-built and usually the stronger choice. For everyday chat, writing and documents in major Indian languages, Gemini is the more complete assistant. Test both on your own audio if voice quality matters.
Is Sarvam AI cheaper than Gemini?
They're priced differently. Gemini is a subscription: free tier, AI Plus ₹399/month, AI Pro ₹1,950/month. Sarvam is usage-based in rupees, for example ₹0.49 a minute for speech-to-text, with free credits for new accounts and no monthly fee on pay as you go.
Which gives a GST invoice, Gemini or Sarvam AI?
Sarvam, as an Indian company, invoices in rupees after every payment. Google's personal Gemini plans charge GST but the invoice isn't GSTIN-attached, so businesses can't claim input credit; a Google Workspace subscription is needed for that.
Can I get Gemini Pro free in India?
Yes, if you're a Jio user aged 18+ on an unlimited 5G plan of ₹349 or more (or a 1.5 GB/day plan of ₹299 or more): Jio bundles 18 months of Google AI Pro, claimed from the MyJio app. Jio's terms close new claims on 29 October 2026.
