How to choose an AI assistant in India
Start with the job, not the brand. For English-first drafting, analysis and coding help, the global assistants — ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — are still the most capable, and all three now show prices in rupees. ChatGPT Go and Google AI Plus both start at ₹399 a month, which is the cheapest way into a paid plan; Claude's paid plan starts at ₹2,399.
If your work is in an Indian language, look at coverage before quality benchmarks. Gemini and Sarvam each support ten Indian languages in our data, Yellow.ai nine and Krutrim seven, while ChatGPT covers six and Claude four. Sarvam and Krutrim are Indian companies that bill in rupees, give a GST invoice and host data in India — the only assistants here that pass all seven India-readiness checks.
The GST catch with global assistants
None of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini (personal plan), Perplexity or Notion AI gives an input-credit-eligible Indian GST invoice. For an individual that doesn't matter. For a GST-registered business it means accounting for the tax under reverse charge, or — for Gemini — buying through Google Workspace instead, which does support GSTIN invoicing. If a clean GST invoice is a hard requirement, the Indian vendors are the simpler buy.
Our take: most people should try the free tier of ChatGPT or Gemini first and only pay when they hit the limits. Businesses with Indian-language customers or data-localisation rules should test Sarvam alongside whichever global assistant their team prefers — the two are often used together.
